A HOT START TO THE FLAMING JUNE HALF MARATHON

Over 650 runners took part in the first Flaming June Half Marathon which started and finished in Impington after following a 13.1 mile varied multi terrain course which visited four other villages Histon, Girton, Oakington and Westwick.

Local runner Sullivan Smith stormed home in an incredible time of 1 hour 14 minutes for the varied nature of the course terrain. Sullivan finished a full five minutes ahead of the second runner home. The first female to finish was Rachel Cave in a time of 1 hour 27 mins 21 secs.

Runners came from all over the country and region for the event which was organised by Friends of Histon & Impington Recreation Ground. The Friends also organise the popular Bonfire 10k held in November.

An incredible 88 runners from Histon & Impington ran the half marathon and only 200 runners had run the Bonfire Burn 10k before.

The organisers had provided dozens of free places to runners supporting local charities Blue Smile, Cambridgeshire MND and CLIC Sargent , and many other runners ran for their chosen charity.

Race Director Neil Davies enthuses ‘we had a fantastic event and fortunate that the 18 months detailed planning resulted in the run going smoothly. We have received great feedback from runners particularly for the marshals’.

The event raised £4500 and half of the profits from the event are going to be used to purchase a Community Public Access Defibrillator which will be installed on the wall of the Recreation Ground Centre so that it is accessible for the entire community.
