Commemorative poppy seed campaign

The British Legion has asked the public and local authorities to plant Flanders poppy seeds on their own land under the Plant Your Town Red scheme.

The campaign hopes to see the UK awash with poppies during the centenary period in commemoration of all those who lost their lives in WWI. The funds raised by the campaign will go towards the £1.6 million the Legion spends each week on welfare to the Armed Forces community.

We have been allocated 20,000 free seeds which the enviro volunteers (a local community group) have broadcast amongst the young hedge in Glebe Way alongside the Burial Ground off Mill Lane. We felt this to be a fitting location as many residents from Histon and Impington contributed to the Great War, some making the ultimate sacrifice. Some of the graves found in the grounds have been marked with a special headstone by the War Graves Commission. Hopefully we should soon see a ribbon of red poppies to honour those people.

The British Legion also intends to provide seeds to be sown at the Community Orchard at the rear of Manor Park.
